Podholic: The Fast Lane Talk Podcast

Want an electric vehicle that’s not a Tesla? The Americans at Fast Lane talk up some electrifying alternatives.

FOR this week’s Podholic review, we head to the United States and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains to tune into The Fast Lane talk from Boulder, Colorado (https://tflcar.libsyn.com).

Hosted by father and son Roman and Tommy Mica, the weekly show features everything from news, reviews and family banter. Whilst Roman may be an unknown quantity for Kiwi listeners, his energetic cadence and years of journalistic exploits can also be experienced through the TFL Car YouTube channel (they also have a truck-focused spinoff …because, well, ‘Murica).

In a sea of podcasts infused with an overabundance of advertising, TFL talk is refreshingly free of adverts, helping liberate additional dialogue that would otherwise be interrupted.

There is entertainment aplenty, as Roman and Tommy don’t hold back the punches when it comes to disagreement. Sure, it’s not quite an American Chopper, Paul Teutul Senior versus Jnr spectacle, but it is refreshingly frank nonetheless.

Anyone looking for an EV with the Government’s clean car discount in mind should go and check out Episode 76, where Tesla’s current lineup gets compared to some entertaining alternatives. These include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and upcoming Kia EV6, Porsche Taycan and two Motoring NZ has tested - the technically-related MINI Cooper SE and BMW i3.

One glaring omission, however, is Nissan’s Leaf. Whilst a frequent sight on New Zealand roads, battery degradation issues in first-generation models prevent The Fast Lane from giving it a recommending rating. Intrigued and want to know more? Lay back, grab those headphones and have a listen.
