Podholic: The Smoking Tire
The American perspective on all things car culture is intrinsically fascinating.
IN the world of automotive digital media, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with many content creators trying to out-do each other with supersized personalities, big-budget visuals and attention-grabbing headlines. Then in a refreshing interlude, there is the Smoking Tire podcast.
The weekly California-domiciled show covers everything and everything related to car culture, from the down to earth viewpoints of die-hard car enthusiast Matt Farah and automotive content producer Zack Klapman.
There is something for everyone, from humour-infused exchanges with media personalities, comedians, and industry executives, to opinions over aftermarket trends, the latest in high-performance cars, and infuriating drivers that will grind your gears.
Amongst the many great episodes, one absolute gem is when world-renowned shutterbug Larry Chen joins the discussion for an insight into the realm of automotive photography. If you love getting behind the lens, then Larry’s exploits in recommending camera gear (yeah, sorry Apple users, the iPhone doesn’t make the cut), location-scouting, and obtaining the perfect shot make it an emphatic must-listen.
Any notable downsides? Well, not really. Sure, the mass of pre-show advertising will be of annoyance to some, and discussion often understeers into musings over the finest watches and sound systems in existence - but that’s part of the charm. Dialogue between Farah, Klapman and guests tends to flow well, and any awkward topic transitions are minimal.
Overall, the Smoking Tire is well worth the listen with authentic content that will leave many in fits of laughter, curiosity and craving for more.
