Podholic: Time to wow
The Brits do drag racing … differently.
IN a break from Podholic tradition, we look at the more visual side of motoring through the British lens of Mat Watson and his insanely popular Carwow YouTube channel. Intrigued? Let’s dive into the secret sauce that makes this show tick.

Car-what? Mat-who? Unless you’ve been living under a solid chunk of greywacke for the past 10 years, you’ve likely come across Carwow’s entertaining exploits on your mobile device’s YouTube feed.
Notoriously known for drag racing some of the rarest and most absurd examples of motoring history down an English airfield (more on that in a bit), Mat’s journalistic talents also see him tootling around countryside villages testing everything from exotic Ferraris to fast Fords.
Every in-depth car review covers key comparison metrics from performance, practicality, the five most annoying things (and five good things), plus the all-important ‘stick of truth’ that exposes automakers who engage in fake exhaust trickery. Who knew car manufacturers would stoop to such lows!?
Arguably, it’s Watson’s schoolyard humour that keeps many glued to their screens. Some may find the innuendo a tad overbearing, but the quick wit keeps the engagement between Mat and his guests highly entertaining.
While the show focuses on the vehicles rather than big-name celebrities, it has featured heavy firepower in the form of ex-F1 ace David Coulthard and MotoGP star Dani Pedrosa - amongst many others too.
This brings us to Carwow's winning formula. Forget the journalistic critique side of things - instead, it's the incredible drag racing that lures the punters. Who wouldn't want to see an F1 car go up against a Porsche 911 Turbo S, a group of Audi Quattro's battle it out, or an Arrma Limitless remote-control car blitz everything across the quarter mile?
Some may label this throttle-mashing formula cynically simple, yet it resonates incredibly well with viewers. After all, the closest comparable experience that many have in their daily lives is the good old traffic light Grand Prix (not that we condone that sort of thing).
So Carwow’s YouTube channel is sounding like a bit of you? Grab an ale, subscribe, and watch countless hours vanish away. You won’t regret it.
