Podholic: F1 to the power of 10

It’s a ‘remember when’ nostalgia trip back to a specific period of the top tier of motorsport.

HERE’S a pod whose title tells all: ‘Bring Back V10s’ is all about the period when Formula One required makers to front with V10 engines.

Which was? Well, basically from 1986 to 2005, though success only came after 1989. Diehards will know this.

The formula of 3.5-litre atmospheric engines opened up a new range of possibilities for manufacturers. They could choose between different configurations and cylinder numbers; V8, V10 or V12..

A show that puts pure focus on the period is hosted by F1 expert, editor and author Glenn Freeman.

He is regularly joined by expert guests, including notable F1 journalist Edd Straw and former racer turner commentator and writer Karun Chandhok. Occasional appearances by drivers and other figures who were directly involved in the sport during that era liven things up as well.

Think of the podcast as a retrospective version of Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ but in audio-only format. Episodes look to unearth little-known stories. The background to the 1997 title fight between Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve is one. Alternately, the pod will revisit iconic races and explore the technical innovations and personal dramas that defined this era.

One brilliant interview is with Mika Hakkinen is respect to his experiences at the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix.

Freeman’s ability to blend detailed analysis with engaging storytelling shines through. His ability to dissect into simple terms complex technical aspects of the sport lifts the show and makes it as engaging for casual listeners as it will be for hardcore fans.

Chat occasionally strays into territory outside the F1 and its V10 era. You get to hear about IndyCar. Current F1 matters are also occasionally raised. I’d argue these elements adds depth and context. Many of the sport’s most iconic drivers have participated in different motorsport disciplines all over the globe.

Bring Back V10s is a must; it rewards listeners with a deep understanding of what made this era so special.
