Holden: The end and a new beginning
Australia is out of the car-making business – but this isn’t the end, says Holden’s boss here.
TODAY Holden closes shop in Adelaide and, with that, Australia is out of the car-making business.
We asked Holden New Zealand boss Kristian Aquilina, Australian-born and a Holden high-flier, to offer some comment. This is what he says:
“Holden is an iconic brand in both New Zealand and Australia and while October 20 is the end of manufacturing in Australia, it is not the end of Holden.
“Holden and GM’s is committed to both NZ and Australia. Our brand is undergoing a significant evolution and we’re building a bright future that honours the legacy of our past.
“The team in Australia has looked after Holden employees with dignity and respect – 85 percent of all workers have successfully transitioned into jobs, retirement or study.
“In Australia, Holden will retain approximately 1000 direct employees, including more than 300 designers and engineers. This is in addition to nearly 6000 employees across the national dealer network.”
