Updated Camry confirmed for NZ
It’s no longer a big star, but still worth keeping on.
THOUGH it is now a minor sales performer, local commitment to Camry, a nameplate Kiwis have known since the 1990s, will continue into the next generation car.
The 2024 car just revealed by Toyota ahead of a formal unveiling at a motor show in California this weekend is a heavy revision of the current line.
Toyota has released images but is still to divulge full technical detail, save to say it will restrict to a petrol-electric drivetrain - a determination that will seem old news to Toyota New Zealand, as only hybrid editions have availed here for several years.
The Palmerston North distributor today confirmed Camry is being kept in sales circulation, but has not shared when that will occur. If NZ release synchs with that for Australia, then it arrive in the second half of 2024.
Images released by Toyota Australia reinforce that this is a heavy revision of the current offer.
While there are new front and rear fascias, and a new interior, it has the same footprint and underpinning.
It is the first Camry to be fitted with a fully-digital instrument cluster, but there is expectation only the top spend types will achieve the 12.3-inch instrument display and conjoined 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, the latter running Toyota's latest software with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. More budget editions seem set to achieve an 8.0-inch touchscreen and 7.0-inch driver instrument display.
Keyless entry and start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and Toyota Connected Services support are expected to be standard.
Big spend editions take a head-up display, JBL premium audio system, leather-accented seat upholstery, paddle shifters, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, and front and rear parking sensors.
Power arrives from a revised version of the long-lived 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, now matched with new-generation hybrid technology comprising two electric motors – developing 168kW (up 8kW).
In the US it is available with a third electric motor on the rear axle for all-wheel drive, and a 173kW power output. This is not expected to avail in right-hand-drive.
