Tank assault beefs up
GWM’s largest off-roader for export is here soon.
PRICING and some detail about the technology and specification has been shared for the largest-yet sports utility off-roader from a Chinese brand.
The GWM Tank 500 hybrid seems set to arrived between April and June, in $74,990 Lux and $82,990 Ultra formats.
Tank is an apt name: GWM’s export flagship measures 5078mm long, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall and has with room for seven occupants.
While those proportions make it closer in size to the biggest LandCruiser, the 300-Series, it has a smaller capacity. lower output engine than Toyota’s largest off-road legend.
GWM’s might is expressed with a electric-assisted turbopetrol 2.0-litre four-cylinder.
Conceivably, then, it could be considered more a foil for the soon-to-be-replaced Prado, likely getting perhaps just a month or so head start on that model.
Output for the Tank 500 is cited at 258kW and 615Nm – equivalent to the Tank 300 Hybrid, the $56,990 top dog edition of that medium vehicle.
The powertrain is, in both models, matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a low-range four-wheel-drive system.
A locking rear differential will be standard on the entry-level Lux Hybrid, while the flagship Ultra Hybrid adds a locking front differential.
Braked towing capacity for the GWM Tank 500 is rated at 3000 kilograms, equivalent to the current Toyota Prado and 500kg ahead of the Tank 300, but down on the 3.5-tonne tow rating of the diesel-powered Ford Everest and the Isuzu D-Max.
GWM’s Tank range goes even larger in numeric, physical and engine size, but those models are not yet being exported.
