The Carmudgeon Show podcast falls into the former category with an entertaining conversation that offers swathes of motoring knowledge, comedy and honest opinion. Sounds promising, but does it deliver?

The weekly broadcast is chaperoned by Derek Tam-Scott, a budding up and coming automotive journalist, and some bloke who resembles the lead actor in the movie Happy Gilmore. Oh? Yes, that would be Jason Cammisa (above).

You may know Jason from Motor Trend’s Ignition series - a great watch if you frequent YouTube (especially the E39 BMW M5 vs Americanised Commodore SS episode). Think of Cammisa as America’s Chris Harris – a Top Gear, top bloke who has an uncanny ability to convey everything happening between the steering wheel and the tarmac at speeds that will blur your senses.

Tam-Scott (arguably the more civil of the pair) and Cammisa bring an air of comedic relief to every episode. Wide-ranging topics include new car reviews, track day experiences, unwise purchases and a good dose of road rage. Well, perhaps, internal turmoil.

There is a refreshing lack of those annoying sponsorship adverts, and the dialogue avoids some of the awkward chemistry that plagues other shows. Some may argue a content advisory label should apply, but the colourful (and perfectly timed) language is part of the allure.

Perhaps the pod’s most significant draw is the genuine intrigue for all things niche and quirky. Cammisa’s recent acquisition of a three-cylinder Honda Beat (below) is a testament to that – 90s Japanese Kei cars generally aren’t the first thing you’d think of when it comes to an automotive journalist’s car collection, but hey, what a neat addition!

There is conversation aplenty if you’re into newer stuff too. In one episode, Nissan’s slick new Z coupe gets verbally dissected. The post-drive consensus is mainly positive except for its interior and high-speed stability.

Overall, The Carmudgeon Show delivers exceptionally well on its mission; it offers an addictive aural experience that will have you subscribing in no time. So go on, sit back and have a listen.
