Podholic: Rusty's Garage
/A New Zealand-domiciled Aussie’s inside line into the world of motorsport
TIME and time again, amidst the myriads of podcasts, some will lure a hammer towards your volume controls, and others will have you subscribing in a heartbeat.
Rusty’s Garage is one of the best shows in existence.

Hosted by legendary Aussie motorsport commentator Greg Rust (now a resident of Havelock Norrth), the weekly published pod is a must-listen for all diehard petrolheads.
Many of you will have heard of Greg’s commentary exploits around the podiums and pitlanes of 2-litre touring cars, V8 Supercars, and many other supporting categories over the years.
The premise of his show is brilliant; for every episode, a well-renowned guest joins in and recounts their experiences within the world of motorsport. And whilst Rusty chaperones the broadcast, his ability to sit back and let his guests tell the stories without interruption makes the Garage an absolute must-listen.
The pod features an entire grid of legendary motorsport personalities such as ex-F1 champ Alan Jones, Mark Skaife, Kiwi ace Jim Richards and recent 24 Hours of Le Mans winner and – for us Manawatu residents - local hero Brendon Hartley. Honestly, those names are just the tip of the field regarding the sheer breadth, depth and character that Greg has on his show – there is just so much more.
The unfiltered back stories of some of racing's greatest names will leave you utterly speechless, cringing and in fits of laughter. Who knew about the hilarious antics of the late Niki Lauda to ex-Formula One designer Malcolm Oastler’s take on Jacques Villeneuve's weird indifference towards any other living soul. Brilliant stuff!
Objectively speaking, there is little to lament. Some listeners will find the mid-show advertising a little weird – you’ll want to start filling up with Ampol, only to keep realising it’s not a Kiwi-based podcast, and a Siri-like voiceover interjects sporadically with topical thoughts and factoids. Overall, that's just minor stuff compared to all the excellent content the show offers.
So don’t hesitate - subscribe, pour a pint and get listening. Rusty’s Garage is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other good podcast platforms.
