Podholic: Full charge ahead

Chasing the latest intel on electric transport and the world of renewable energy?

THE Fully Charged Show aims to have you amped about the Edison revolution. But does it deliver enough voltage for your podcast consumption needs? Let’s dive in a little deeper.

Hosted by the ever-enthusiastic Robert Llewellyn of Red Dwarf and Scrapheap Challenge fame, the weekly pod is your one-stop-shop for electric vehicle news, reviews and in-depth interviews.

Listeners will appreciate the Brit’s passion for renewable energy, even if its EV-only focus may be slightly biased (never mind Hydrogen and other propulsion solutions). The broadcast covers many different topics, with fascinating insights into battery development, micropower generation, and the politics stifling (and accelerating) the uptake of electric vehicles across the globe.

You’ll be exposed to an intriguing glossary of terminology like ‘V2G’. No, that isn’t shorthand for some genetically engineered vegetable, but vehicle-to-grid capability where an EV can feed power back into the local power network. Others include vehicle-to-load (V2L), carbon capture, and the ‘so-called’ holy grail of battery performance and safety – solid-state chemistry.

The pod’s best strength is the interviews. Unlike other broadcasts focusing on one or two core themes, Fully Charged broadens the scope with insights across the automotive and renewable energy spectrum. Guests range from Polestar’s Fredrika Klaren, detailing the automaker’s push into sustainable manufacturing, to Helen Czerski – a British physicist passionate about renewables and climate activism.

Suppose you’re like this writer and fascinated with the inner workings of anything that moves. In that case, you’ll love Robert’s interview with Sandy Munro (above) – the founder of America-domiciled product consultancy firm Munro and Associates. https://fullychargedshow.libsyn.com/sandymunro

For the uninitiated, Munro tears down everything from iPhones to cars, evaluating all things manufacturing-related, from component costings to assembly processes. His teardown of Tesla’s Model Y is a brilliant insight into the American EV carmaker’s refreshing approach to streamlining car building and, in the process, ID’ing other manufacturers that could learn a thing or two.

Some listeners may find Llewellyn’s occasional off-topic diatribe tiresome, with the conversation understeering into politics and everything wrong with hybrid vehicles. Nevertheless, the pod balances out nicely with unique topics and intriguing guests.

Overall, is the Fully Charged podcast worth your time? On balance - absolutely! So, sit back, relax, and subscribe away.

The pod is found on all good broadcasting platforms, such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
