Podholic: Tuning, tracks and time attacks
/SlipAngle explores the inside line of club-level motorsport.
THOSE passionate about motorsport and looking for more than just race recaps and team talk might want to explore SlipAngle.
This is an American effort that touts as the pod that covers almost everything in primarily US club racing, though one episode worth listening to has a New Zealand involvement.
From the intricacies of tuning to the thrill of time attacks, this podcast has something for every motorsport enthusiast.
Host Austin Cabot is a photographer and editor. He’s joined by casual racer Adam Jabaay and producer Abrin Schmucker. Their blend of expertise and passion for motorsport certainly exudes a fresh and engaging perspective.
The weekly production covers a surprisingly diverse array of racing topics, including the nuances of rules and regulations, tyre management, racecraft, engine tuning, and touring car racing.
SlipAngle certainly delivers. You’ll discover informative interviews with drivers, component manufacturers, and development engineers. The conversation is good, and guests can speak without risk of being over-spoken, as happens in some other shows.
Show 564 featuring Andre Simon (above) is a standout for Kiwi enthusiasts as he is a Queenstown-based gearhead. Simon provides a balanced perspective on the state of motorsport and shares his passion, which led to the creation of the High Performance Academy. There, he teaches others how to build and tune engines, set up race cars and install wiring …erm, correctly.
Andre’s tuning expertise was revealed to this writer when he resolved knock issues on a mischievous Subaru Legacy GT; this happening back in his Speedtech Motorsport days. So, it was also great to hear his thoughts on time attack racing, New Zealand and American rule comparisons, the old days of NZV8 engine parity, and club racing.
Minor quibbles? While the podcast excels in content, the audio quality could benefit from some finesse to improve clarity. Despite this, viewers will appreciate the honest and informative dialogue. The show does have a garage-set YouTube presence, yet uploads are sporadic, and nor is it remarkably polished.
Ultimately, with wide-ranging topics and insightful interviews, SlipAngle should be on your subscription list whether you’re a motorsport competitor or a casual enthusiast.
