Podholic: The one about Mulder, Scully and the Ford Taurus

A couple of Canadians have a thing about cars being TV stars

The Unnamed Motoring Podcast is a Canadian effort that sets to out to deliver car news, reviews, and industry insights with a comedic spin -  laughs galore or an utter bore?

Hosts Benjamin Hunting and Sami Haj-Assaad are motoring writers who set out to impart what’s what; the theme is casual banter but there are thought-provoking perspective.

It delivers what would seem to be, at times, pretty much unscripted dialogue in respect to vehicle reviews, reliability reports and hilarious hypotheticals. Their mix of expertise and humour is engaging and entertaining.

One likeable element is the occasional dive into pop culture. Episodes exploring cars that have appeared in TV series include a ‘Star Car Face-off’. In this, for instance, the hosts humorously rip into the Ford Taurus rental car in ‘The X-Files,’ and Chevrolet’s K5 Blazer 4x4, synonymous with the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, in ‘Stranger Things.’ I think these discussions will have you hooked with a layer of nostalgia that appeals to car enthusiasts and pop culture fans alike.

The format’s casual, ‘beer-at-the-pub’ vibe makes each episode feel like a get-together among mates. Benjamin's analytical approach and Sami's industry insights create an engaging dynamic, even if occasionally it leads to awkwardness, with cross-talking and jokes that don’t quite land.

Production quality is polished and, overall, its mix of humour and industry analysis makes it worth the listen. While it has some rough edges, these only add to its charm, so check it out.
