GRAVEL Notes is a monthly Autosport Media podcast on all things rally-related.

Hosted by Tom Howard, the British weekly magazine’s rally reporter, the show covers a broad spectrum of rallying topics.

You can expect previews and post-event analysis of all the World Rally Championship and European Rally Championship rounds, plus a look at Dakar Rally; team politics, technical talk and discussions about cars and drivers also feature.

The production conveys the sense of community within this inclusive sport; there’s no Formula One elitism here. Rallying is portrayed as a discipline where drivers, teams and fans come together in a supportive and competitive environment.

(Speaking of the latter, check out this year’s NZ national championship calendar. Rally spectatorship is thoroughly recommended for those who haven’t experienced it, as there’s a refreshing sense of camaraderie as drivers race against the clock rather than door to door).

Back to the pod. Howard’s easy-going dialogue and ability to break down complex topics make the podcast an engaging listen for die-hard fans and newcomers. His rapport with guests, including other commentators such as Scottish national Colin Clark, adds authenticity and unscripted humour.

Interviews with Petter Solberg, Thierry Neuville, and Rally New Zealand 2022 winner Kalle Rovanperä provide deep insights into career and personal anecdotes. Rovanperä’s story is inspiring. The double reigning World Champion started his driving journey at an age when most kids were still trading cards, adding a fascinating dimension to the show.

Kiwi listeners should dig up the episode covering the 2022 Rally New Zealand. Martyn Lee (the show’s then-host) praises the past event, notably the South Auckland-located Jack’s Ridge addition developed by former NZRC rally champion Andrew Hawkeswood.

As Lee points out, the Haunui Power Stage was initially met with scepticism. Yet, Jack’s Ridge eventually won over drivers and commentators with its well-designed corners, jumps, and spectator-friendly layout.

Areas for improvement? Surprisingly, while a past Safari Rally made it to video format, other episodes have not. This absence of video content isn’t a deal-breaker, yet interview or event footage could enhance the overall experience and attract a wider audience.

Ultimately, Gravel Notes is a commendable effort. Sure, there are more polished pods in existence. Still, it makes up for it with insightful commentary and engaging interviews that make each episode a rewarding listen for anyone into rallying.
