A two-rotor engine charges batteries to lend this pint-sized show car 272kW!

PREDICTION the concept expected to point to the future of the MX-5 would be electric has proven prescient, though with a twist only Mazda could provide.

The drivetrain for the Iconic SP study revealed in Tokyo today for the national motor and mobility show there is as exotic as the car’s look, which blends MX-5 and RX-7 styling into a curvaceous fixed roof coupe.

Effectively, a mid-mounted rotary engine acts as a generator to replenish a battery pack, of unknown capacity, that feeds the electric drivetrain.

Mazda has just employed a small rotary in a range extender application for its current electric, the MX-30, but this system is different again.

Mazda says the concept’s rotary isn’t purely petrol-wed, as the MX-30’s is, but can run on a variety of fuels, including hydrogen and renewable fuel, and the battery can also be plugged into a home outlet to recharge it.

It is also quoting a maximum output of 272kW.

Mazda describes the engine architecture as scalable, rising possibility it could be used for other applications.

Mazda says the car is here to underscore its commitment to driving enjoyment first and foremost.

At 418 centimetres from nose to tail as well as 115cm at its roof and 183cm from side to side, the concept is 25cm longer than the current, and just refreshed, ND MX-5, but lower and wider by a noticeable amount.

Mazda’s information share suggests a low centre of gravity and splits its 1446kg kerb weight nearly 50:50 front to back.

The car’s interior is all about minimalism, with a typewriter-key gear selector, digital instrument cluster, and small infotainment display. The seats are covered in bio fabric.
