Vital electric Peugeot a prize catch
/French brand has the e-3008 into final development and is daring fans to spot it.
HERE’S what Peugeot has been prepared to share - that its first fully dedicated electric car will receive an all-new i-Cockpit interior and rakish design.
The rest is up to fans to uncover. At least, in the period between now and the official reveal, later this year.
In delivering these images of the vital new e-3008, the French lead brand of the Stellantis empire has laid down a public challenge.
It has dared the public to photograph its upcoming crossover during its final development stages.
“Ordinarily, prototypes are hidden and do everything to escape public scrutiny,” the make’s Paris head office has said.
“The new e-3008, however, is on display and involving the general public in its launch.”
The car's exterior employs many design cues seen on most modern crossover SUVs.
However, the e-3008 also features a sloping roof to the rear, fitting into the ‘coupe-SUV’ niche. It’s not just for style; brand boss Linda Jackson says aero efficiency has to be considered for electrics.
“There’s no doubt, when we used to have these very high SUVs, they’re not aerodynamically suited to efficiency, so inevitably they will change”.
It’s expected the e-3008’s front end to be characterised by Peugeot’s trademark three-claw LED running lights, with the brand’s new logo sure to feature all around the exterior and interior of the car. The prototype is fitted with glossy black wheels with aerodynamic creases and detailing.
The new iteration of the make’s i-Cockpit is headlined by a sweeping 21-inch curved display panel – much like the iDrive setup in new BMWs. This will comprise two screens and continues to place above a small, squared-off steering wheel.
Like the smaller Peugeot e-308, the e-3008 will get a smaller rectangular display below the main screen, featuring several shortcut buttons. UIt appears to have a ‘floating’ centre console design that bisects the entire front half of the cabin, with the gear selector now coming in the form of a toggle switch on the dashboard.
The e-3008 is likely based on Stellantis' eVMP platform, built to support the Group's range of pure electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The platform is essentially a massively reworked version of the existing EMP2 frame - brought up-to-date to keep the new 3008's development costs down.
The e-3008 is to be fully unveiled in September after final testing and development.
No point sneaking around the Cadrona area, hoping to see it there. The famous Snow Farm - proper name the South Hemisphere Proving Ground - is a busy place at the moment, with car makers using it to sign off winter testing involvements for impending product. Most obviously the ‘out one day’ Tesla CyberTruck, whose images on the Pisa Range ice have been shared in a way that makes it increasingly probable it’s less a handy fan catch and more likely a brand orchestrated campaign.
However, Peugeot is keeping to warm climes for the e-3008 development work. Everything, it is says, will be contained to Europe.
It accepts the chances of someone seeing the car then is highly likely. In fact, there’s a prize if they do.
That’s the impetus for a #CAMOCATCH promotion, which started back in May when Peugeot asked the public to vote on three new camouflages for the e-3008, with ‘Street Art’, ‘Optical Art’ and ‘Prototype’ themes being voted for in the end.
As the images here show, the chosen camouflages are now applied to e-3008s that will now hit the road.
Social media users are encouraged to photograph the camouflaged e-3008s and upload the image to Facebook or Instagram between July 15 and August 15 with the hashtag #CAMOCATCH and the @peugeot tag.
Each camouflaged e-3008 will also have a QR code printed on its body, which can be scanned to take a spotter to the #CAMOCATCH website.
