Freshened look, more kit for Octavia

Last big restyle to see model through to electric era switch.

RESTYLING that is likely to last the Skoda Octavia through to point where it is replaced by an all-electric model has been revealed.

Skoda New Zealand has not indicated when it might see the new look for a model that has been a low-key product for the past year, largely due to supply constraint.

The update delivers a slimmer radiator grille and LED lights. Top types have LED Matrix units that feature what Skoda calls 'Crystallinium' sections that individually switch between high beam and low beam. 

There are also new LED brake lights in a basic form, as well as an optional version, which includes scrolling indicators, fresh wheel styles and a change of front and rear bumper, than adds 9mm to the cars’ overall length.

Even the badge has changed: The logo is now more two-dimensional, the better for their digital appearance and the Skoda lettering is altered.

Safety systems upgrade to take a new Attention and Drowsiness Assist, which aims to help a driver maintain concentration on the road ahead and can distinguish between short-term inattention (distraction) and long-term inattention (fatigue).

Inside, the car now gets an optional 13-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard, with updated software. Standard versions also get a ten-inch screen and a ten-inch digital instrument panel. The wagon has an automatically retracting luggage cover and the option of a dedicated storage box to hold bags, cups and bottles.

The 'Laura' digital voice assistant carries over but will be updated later in the year to feature ChatGPT-based AI voice control, which will be sent to cars via an over-the-air software update.

All Octavias now get dual-zone climate control, and for higher-spec models, there's a new wireless phone charger which outputs 15 watts and includes a phone cooling function. 

There are also upgraded USB-C sockets, which now output up to 45 watts; enough to charge a laptop or a tablet. The keyless entry system now automatically locks the car if it detects that the key has moved more than 1.5 metres away.

Upholstery incorporates more recycled materials. The ice scraper (fitted to the inside of the fuel filler flap) and the umbrella that's tucked into a compartment in the driver's door are now made from sustainable materials.

Fully fossil fuel-reliant editions continue most of its powertrains from the old model. Skoda hasn't mentioned the plug-in hybrid models, but expectation is for an upgraded 19kWh battery for a 100km electric range, rapid 50kW charging, and two models - a standard 150kW version, and a 201kW RS plug-in hybrid.

Sportline trim delivers the same 15mm suspension drop meted the RS version, but the latter also has an electronically controlled VAQ limited-slip differential.

Skoda has previously indicated this Octavia might be around until 2028, if not slightly longer.
