Freshened editions of BMW’s blitzing sedan and wagon here from October.

AN update to the BMW M3 that delivers more horsepower also comes at a price, with stickers for both body styles rising by $2000.

Delivery of the updated G80 line will begin from October, also the same time when the revised mainstream versions of the donor 3-Series begins.

The M3 continues in sedan and wagon/Touring guises, and only in xDrive all-wheel-drive - which is the format that achieved the mid-life performance enhancements; the rear-drive editions remain as before. The pep-up mirrors that announced earlier on for the M4 coupe.

Power from the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine increases to 390kW, from 375kW and while torque remains at 650Nm, it now sustains that output over a broader rev range – from 2750rpm to 5730rpm, up from 5500rpm.

Power continues to be sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite the output bump, BMW claims the 0-100kmh time remains unchanged, at 3.5 seconds for the now $193,200 M3 Competition xDrive Sedan and 3.6 seconds for the equivalent wagon, which holds a $197,600 sticker.

The changes contribute to improved 0-200kmh times – being reduced by half a second for both body styles, to 11.8 and 12.4 seconds respectively.

Also arriving for the M3 are several minor changes to the exterior styling – including revised headlights and new alloy wheel designs – as well as updates to the car's interior. Also shared with the regular edition 3-Series, these include a new flat-bottomed steering wheel, "fresh touches" to the cabin, and the introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5 for infotainment and iDrive duties.

The car has paint colour options beyond a selection of factory-standard hers that range from $2500 to $7500 but the biggest extra-cost buy by fair is M carbon ceramic brakes, in gold, for $19,000. An M Carbon exterior package will add $9500 to the bill for the sedan, $1000 less for the Touring.
